Entry #9

Non-fiction and Fiction texts can offer support to ESL students. It is important to also be aware of the challenges these texts can present as well.

Both the Non-fiction and fiction elements of the reading anthology offer support for ESL students.  In this text the topics of study are presented often with a fiction and non-fiction component. This element helps to give background knowledge and make connections with students. In both genres the vocabulary is given in a highlighted format. This helps ESL students to continually recognize the key words for the lesson. In the non-fiction pieces often there is a brief glossary with each passage that offers definitions for the vocabulary are well. Both genres are supported with visuals, however the visuals for the fiction pieces often fantasy might be a little inaccessible.  The fiction illustrations often represent inferred information and alone could be difficult for ESL students to gain meaning from. The photographs and charts in the non-fiction pieces offer much more universal representations and explanations making them very useful to ESL students.  The book is written at a 5th grade level of language development and vocabulary.  However several support pieces are available from the publisher to help ESL students at all levels of acquisition gain access to the topics and literature.
